Blog Tips | Are You Blogging for the Right Reasons?

This is sort of off topic for me. But as I write I realize that I need to sometimes take a step back and look at why I’m blogging. And possibly you should to. Are you blogging just to make a buck? Then maybe this isn’t for you. Whether your new to blogging or an old veteran please take a moment to read on as I go on what I think are Blogging for the Right Reasons.

Do You Love to Write?

Do you love to write? To share your thoughts, ideas, and stories with readers? Then blogging is a great platform for you! I personally enjoy writing and always have.

Are you Passionate?

Do you have something in your life that you are absolutely passionate about? This can be for just about anything as long as it is something you love to do. A few examples of things people are passionate about: crafting, cooking, model trains, blogging, video games, technology, smart phones and the list goes on and on. You can write just about virtually anything as long as you are passionate about it!

What am I passionate about? I absolutely love Call of Duty, Android Smartphones, and Blogging of course!

Enjoy Helping Others

Do you like to present information that is helpful to potential visitors? If you do then blogging might be right for you! You have the potential to reach a very large audience with the information that you provide! But beware – if you misrepresent yourself then it could spell disaster!

Blogging for Fun!

If you are having fun blogging and all that it entails? Then you are on the right track. If you are struggling to write posts, or only coming up with material that you are hoping to get a buck from? Then you might want to re-evaluate why you are blogging to begin with.

Money – The Wrong Reason?

So, now don’t get me wrong. There is absolutely NOTHING WRONG with trying to make a buck from your labor of love.

BUT….

If it is the ONLY reason why you are blogging? Then get ready to move onto something else. Remember I said ‘Labor of Love’ in that sentence above? That is because it takes a TON of hard work and perseverance to try and have a successful blog. I can tell you my own personal journey has been spending hours upon hours researching, writing, sharing, and networking to try and get a readership to my own blog.  And it’s been a struggle.

But I absolutely love running my little slice of the web.

Conclusion

Of course there are exceptions to every rule. People do and can make a ton of money blogging – and they blog JUST to make money. But for people like myself?  I realize that I might not ever make a ton of money from my site. I’m good with that. If I end up helping someone with an issue I consider that a huge bonus!  Personally, I love providing readers great information about the things I already enjoy and love doing. So to me this isn’t a second job – its just fun!

I hoped you enjoyed reading this and can take away something from this. Take a look at your motives and if they are “true” to you? Then keep blogging! And good luck!

Being stuck with doing the same routine everyday makes someone forget what the real essence of a job is; for this instance, blogging. Sometimes, we are all caught up with doing the same thing that we forget why we actually do it. This is really relieving to read. To step back for a moment and assess oneself of the reason why he/she blogs. Though money is a big contributor of why people blog, it should not be the core reason why someone blogs. It should always boil down to passion and fun! My Mom told me once, “If you do not find joy in what you’re doing, then STOP.” Blogging should be a part of us; not just some part of us.

Thanks Jason for this wonderful reminder :)

    I think you’re absolutely right.

If you’re really passionate about something, you’re less likely to run out of original things to say – or to look like you’re snoring while writing.

Then again – blogging about blogging and writing about writing have always struck me as (1) too easy; and (2) reminiscent of a snake eating its own tail.

Call of Duty, huh? I finally let my son get that, but he got bored with it pretty quick (the appeal was all in being rated “M for Mature,” I think – what teen doesn’t long for the day? He’s much more interested in Team Fortress 2 and Skyrim. Have you tried those? How about Minecraft?

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

Heh – youth really is wasted on the young. We spend our whole lives wanting to grow up and the rest of it trying to relive being a kid again!

I enjoy Call of Duty online. Its a game where I can go on for a bit – blow things up and then put it down again. I’ve been playing FPS (First Person Shooters) for just about 20 years now! I have played Skyrim but was bored after watching the intro. I absolutely love Team Fortress 2 and Minecraft! Problem is time management. I want to play games all the time – my wife manages the time by saying NO! :-) Seriously between working, blogging, and home life I have very little time to put into playing games.

      Thanks for stopping by Holly!

I am doing blogging as I have made this profession and am really passionate about writing. That is the reason I am here as money is not everything.

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

That is a great attitude to take! I had lost my way (more than once) with dollar signs in front of me instead of what I was originally wanting to do – share information and help people! So this article was for me as much as it was for any other blogger – thanks for stopping by!

I never liked writing much unless it was for music. Part of the reason I started my blog was get better at it, and the relatively short format of a blog article makes it hard to bite off my than you can chew.

I also figured if I ever had to find a new job, I’d have something to show that I was doing something productive to help people with my free time at night. And the prospect of making a buck or two provides some motivation too.

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

I dunno if I’d put blogging on my resume. Hmm.. so maybe a music niche blog is in your future as well Bryan?

Unfortunately for me – I have to find ways to cut words instead of trying to pad them to an article. To say I’m long winded is probably an understatement! But I guess that shows I do enjoy writing!

As always thanks for stopping by Bryan!

Passion is very important but it isn’t necessary if you know what you are doing. I manage many blogs that cover various niches like health, jewelry, travel and they include some company blogs as well. I make good money from them and I’m not necessarily passionate about blogging as well. If you learn to outsource things then you can manage your blogs just fine.

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

Nishadha – there is nothing wrong with that. Making money from blogging is great also! But for a lot of people they have to be passionate about the topic they are writing for!

Otherwise they will burn out and forget about it. You have a business model with the sole intention of making money – which is great!

For me its a little bit of both. I blog because I enjoy doing so and if I make a buck while doing it? Its a bonus!

I do think sometimes I get so caught up with blogging that I forget the real reason why I started it, so this has been a reality check for me, I started blogging simply because I love to write and I wanted to be able to share this with others. So thank you for posting this!

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

I started out on the web due to my passion for technology and computers. Now I love to write and hopefully offer a helping hand to those looking for it. Although I do admit that money is a factor -who doesn’t want to earn a buck or two though?

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Thank you for sharing this blog, I could not agree with you more with the points that have been made. Some people only blog because they think they will be able to make a lot of money from it, however it is a lot harder than this. I agree that it requires a lot of dedication and hard work, so you definitely need to be passionate about it and love writing.

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

Nishadha makes a great point too. Nothing is wrong if your sole intention is to make money if you are smart about it. Then it is about making sure you are doing things that focus on that.

For most of us though we enjoy the topics we write about and money cannot be the main focus!

I think sometimes it is so easy to forget why your actually blogging, I mean this blog for me has reminded me why I love it so much and it is definitely not because of the money aspect. I think it is something that I truely enjoy so much that sometimes I forget that it is my job! Thank you for the share!
