This is Part 2 of my article on whether its Battlefield 3 or Call of Duty MW3? Why they BOTH suck. Originally brought about an article I read online about how an EA exec finally “Got One Over” on Call of Duty. It got me to thinking… the only one EA or Activision really “Got one over” on is us – the players. So here is Part 2 on why Call of Duty sucks – Enjoy!
Call of Duty Series
Call of Duty is an “arcade shooter” or FPS (First Person Shooter). It is in no way a “War Sim”. Even though it borrows heavily from past and present wars and “it could happen” war scenarios in the present – it is loosely based on the eras it depicts. Pretty much you and your team run around with a gun and try and kill the other team in closed in maps. What set it apart are the different types of sub games you get to play within it’s multiplayer system.
The first Call of Duty was released in 2003 it has been going strong for over the past 9 years. It didn’t really pick up steam until the “Holy Grail” of Call of Duty 4 – Modern Warfare was released. Many hardcore players think this was the best game of the series (and I tend to agree).
What is strange about this series is that two software development teams work on the series. Infinity Ward who does all of the Call of Duty – Modern Warfare Series, and Treyarch who does the “offshoots” Call of Duty – World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops. There is a division within the Call of Duty on which house they like better. With a majority leaning toward Infinity Ward there are still diehards (like myself) who enjoy Treyarch’s games a little bit more.
Another twist is when Treyarch introduced Zombies in it’s Call of Duty: World at War series and brought them back in Call of Duty: Black Ops.
The series has picked up in popularity and has a huge fan base on both Xbox 360 and Playstation. But the games haven’t really changed over the years. And a lot of the hardcore players think the series has gotten worse rather then better.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
Many are calling this game Modern Warfare “Version 2.5”. Because lets really look at the game. Sure we got a few new game modes with Kill Confirmed and a few Community ones like Infected and Drop Zone. But what else has REALLY changed? It’s still the same FPS we’ve been playing the crap out of for years. We run around – we worry about our e-peen er Kill to Death (K/D) ratio. We talk a bunch of garbage on our headsets.
Why It Sucks
Rats In a Maze Chasing Our Tails
Like a Rat in a Maze or Pavlov’s Dog – We go for the ultimate goal. Whether it’s to get to that last Prestige, get a MOAB, or make the other team cry. Call of Duty has us all suckered.
It is still the same game. Crappy network connectivity. Graphics that haven’t gotten an overhaul.. uh like ever. I can look at Modern Warfare, 2, and then 3 and go.. “OK so they added more Cars”? So I’m exaggerating here – they have updated the maps and the added different little touches to make the environments feel a little more realistic. But its still the same engine.
And don’t even get me started about the collision detection. If I get bumped ONE MORE TIME by another player as I’m trying to longshot someone with my M4. I’m going to eat my headset.
Death Streaks and Support Kill Streaks
I’m not a beastly player. I have a very mild 1.10 K/D. But I absolutely LOATHE that they still put in Death Streaks and now they introduced the Support Kill Streak Class. Nothing will piss me off more than getting killed by either a bullet, grenade, or C4 from that player I just thought I had shot down.
The Support Kill Streak are a joke too. You mean I can die as much as I want but I will still get a Stealth Bomber to take out your ENTIRE team? Or I can get an EMP to take out all of YOUR hard earned Kill Streaks (including a MOAB apparently?)
But I admit it – I abuse the hell out of the Support Kill Streaks. What average player wouldn’t? You would be crazy not to!
Call of Duty: ELITE
Then lets talk about how they implemented Call of Duty ELITE. The launch was horrid. You couldn’t even log in to the site for the first two months due to server overload. They even had to extend the “Founder” status until the end of January due to the down time. And now they are having issues implementing Clan Ops.
The only positive is that you can purchase their ELITE Premium service for $49.99 and not only get all of the DLC content early but you are able to take part in the ELITE community with different types of contests etc… as well as Clan Ops (if they ever get it working).
But wait – only Xbox Live! players really get the content early. PlayStation and PC users still have to wait 30 days after Xbox gets the DLC to be able to get it. The player base was never told they were going to get it as the same time as Xbox Live! players – but they were never NOT told either…
The Exclusivity Contract that Activision signed with Microsoft – essentially screwing PC and Playstation players. Now if you play on Playstation or PC you have to wait 30 days for DLC content. That was great Activision – way to alienate half of your player base.
I don’t even know why they offer a PC version of the game any more. The support is horrid. And as time of this writing – I don’t think they still have an option to get the new maps for the game yet. I know that PC Gaming is starting to fall by the wayside. But people still play on PC’s. Why not support them?
My Final Thoughts on Call of Duty
OK, I admit it. I’m still a Call of Duty junkie. I took the blue pill and went down the rabbit hole. I like the fact I can jump on for an hour get a few matches in and turn it off and walk away. I even purchased their ELITE Premium service. For me its a personal preference to play COD vs. Battlefield. I do NOT think it’s a better game. If anything it’s gotten worse instead of better.
But the bottom line for both Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty ModernWarfare 3?
They Both Suck!
Leave a comment below letting me know what you think of Call of Duty – does it really suck or am I just full of it? Try and Keep it Civil though please.
