I just finished watching the live cast of the Call of Duty Ghosts Multiplayer Reveal and I am now getting excited. I have now gone through the video and brought to you everything that was said during the announcement. I’ve also included a ton of screenshots, information, and insights on what was talked about. Join me as I take you through everything I’ve learned about Call of Duty Ghosts Multiplayer.
Call of Duty: Ghosts Multiplayer Reveal
With this new installment of the Call of Duty series Infinity Wards and Raven software have completely tore down and rebuilt the game from the ground up. They listened to the community and brought back an entirely new experience. If you want you can watch the entire re-broadcast of the even at the Call of Duty: Ghosts website.
Create a Soldier
With this new version of Call of Duty we finally get to truly customize our characters. Instead of the old ‘Create-a-Class’ you now ‘Create-a-Soldier. You get the option to choose the type of soldier, armor, helmet, weapons, lethal, tactical, and score streaks. It has been said that there are over 20,000 different possibilities!
Player Cards and Emblems
No they didn’t implement the giant penis making machine of custom player emblems we are used to seeing in Black Ops II. But they are going to be offering emblems and player cards just like all of the prior Modern Warfare series. You can see an example below of what a few are going to look like.
Improved Player Movement
They emphasized how they have changed everything – including how we move throughout the map. No longer will we get stuck on uneven surfaces like that small rock or chicken like in the past. Now the player will smoothly transition over lower obstacles all with the ability to keep right on running and gunning!
This looked like they took a lot of queues from DICE and Battlefield 3 and improved upon them. Watching the game play I was impressed how the player seemed to move effortlessly around the map now with less snags then in previous versions of COD.
This is a fancy term for how your player moves around on the map. I am definitely happy they decided to work on this. Your player should be able to move smoothly through different types of terrain without getting stuck on a rock.. or a chicken.
Gone are the days of the Dolphin Dive (yay!). But now they introduced the “Knee Slide”. Now you get to be like your favorite rock guitarist every time you sprint and go into a crouch you will slide into it. During the live game play I did notice it definitely wasn’t as annoying as the old dive where you were pretty much useless whenever you went into it.
Yup.. you get to peak your head around corners instead of jumping out and getting shot. Although there are no extra button combos to remember to do this. It will be interesting to see how this translates during actual online game play.
Prestige and XP
10 Levels of Prestige?
There are 10 Prestige levels in the game. What makes it different? You will need to build out 10 different soldiers who each get One Prestige to do it. The good news is once that soldier prestige’s you don’t lose anything. You will understand later why they did this when you see the Squads game mode down below.
You will gain XP from virtually doing anything while playing online of offline. The only time you won’t be earning XP while playing Ghosts? Um.. during the Campaign? Otherwise whether you choose to play Multiplayer online, or Squads offline. You will be earning XP for your soldiers (and I’m pretty sure Squad Points too.)
Infinity Ward has also re-vamped the entire weapons introducing over 30 different new weapons into the game. They also talked about how they overhauled 80% of how the weapons sound, work, and play in the game. Although they didn’t really go into great detail about this. I did not see things like the Target Finder in any of the video.
New Weapon Class Marksman
Dual Render Scope Technology
In order to get the gear you want? Your going to have to earn it. Just like back in the original Call of Duty Black Ops – they essentially brought back currency to the game. It is now called Squad Points. The good news about this system? You no longer have to wait to a certain level to get a specific weapon. If you have enough Squad Points? You can just purchase it. It appears that everything is going to be costing you though. From the type of attachments you want, secondary weapons, equipment, kill streaks etc. You will need to earn Squad Points if you want it in your Soldier’s load out.
In Call of Duty Ghosts they introduced over 30 new perks into the game. Perks are setup a bit different this time around. They took the “Pick 10” system from Black Ops II and changed it up a bit. Instead of 10 points you get 8. Each of the perks is assigned a value from 1 – 5. So depending on the types of perks you choose you can get anywhere from 3 to 11 different perk combinations! Of course you will need to get rid of things like secondary weapons and your equipment to add additional perks to gain more perk slots. Take a look at the screenshots below to see the different types of perks available.
Maps and Sound
Call of Duty players now get dynamic maps. If you’ve played Battlefield 3 you know all about this already. You get to destroy certain elements in the map to help you work the objective. With Ghosts we now get it as well. From being able to set off traps, destroying walls to help improve site lines, and map based environment changes – its no longer just remember the routes. Now you will have to pay attention to the ever changing environment around you!
Improved Audio Experience
The designers over at Infinity Ward made a point to state how they have improved the overall ambient sounds around you in the game. With things like an improved Dynamic Reverb Algorithm you notice the difference when you or the enemy are in different parts of the map. It is hard to explain but the type of echo you will hear will change when your outside, in a building, and even based on the different types of material you are running on (carpet, metal, ground etc….) will affect it. During the live demo I was really impressed. Battlefield 3’s sound is amazing due to this already – it is nice to see that Infinity Ward has done this too now.
Players on your team will provide better call outs during a match. They will warn you where enemy players are etc. From telling you the location of your enemies, to when a grenade is about to blow up, to reloading. They have made sure that the in-game battle chatter will let you know whats going on in the game.
But… I thought that was what your team was for?
New Kill Streaks
With Ghosts they introduced 20 new Score Streaks to the game. Some of the new ones talked about were Juggernaut Maniac, Helo Scout, Vulture, and Odin Strike.
The good (or bad) thing about this is there are less airborne score streaks. This was introduced to try and keep the playing field a little more level for everyone instead of just rewarding those who can beast it. Although I didn’t get to see all of them. I did see that they brought back the Dragon Fly (now with rockets!).
Riley the Guard Dog
Yes, like Rin Tin Tin and Lassie you now get Riley as a Score Streak reward. He will become your partner taking out opposing team members and growl to warn you like a localized UAV when enemy players are near.
No More Death Streaks!
Finally, Infinity Ward has gotten rid of Death Streaks from the game. No more do we have to worry about the player blowing up or shooting you in Final Stand!
Return of the Strike Packages
With Call of Duty Ghosts they brought back Strike Packages from Modern Warfare 3. The return of the 3 different types of packages are: Assault, Support, Specialist.
- Assault – These are all of your lethal Kill Streaks. This ties in well for players who can rack up the kills to get enough points to make this worth it.
- Support – This class is setup for all of your non-lethal kill streaks. These are great for players who might not be able to get enough points to make Assault worth it.
- Specialist – This class is where you pick your perks before hand and you earn them as you kill the opposite team.
There are a 7 new game modes being introduced to the game. But they only talked about a few of them. You can see what they are about below:
Remember the movie with Jason Statham? I’m sure this is where they probably got the idea from. In Cranked it is essentially Team Death Match. The twist? As soon as you get a kill you get a perk and a timer. If you don’t get another kill before the timer goes off? You blow up. If you beast it? You keep getting perks as if your running the Specialist Class. There is also a briefcase your going to want to pick up. It will have “Battle Orders” in it. IF you can manage to stay alive and perform the action it requests you get a reward (killstreak). It looks interesting and I’m looking forward to playing it.
Search & Rescue
With this game mode its a mix of Search & Destroy and Kill Confirmed. The game mode is like this. If you die you drop a tag. Your team mates have to pick up that tag in order for you to be able to stay in the game. If an enemy gets the tag? You are out for that round. So the objective besides killing the other team – it is going to be to collect their tags as well so you can finish the round.
Instead of Spec Ops like with Modern Warfare 3. They are now introducing Squads. What makes this mode interesting is the fact that it can be played single, co-op, or even online against either the AI players, or against other players online. And the good news? You get to earn XP while doing it…. for any of the game modes/types being played.
So we all know the AI in Call of Duty is pretty mediocre at best. Unless your playing Veteran your not getting much of a challenge. Now that has all changed. The AI is supposedly going to emulate what its like to play against real people. They are going to do everything you’d expect players to do: drop shot, corner camp, peak around corners, and jump shot. So you might have to actually work at it now.
Your Squad AI
I mentioned up above about how you get to create 10 different soldiers to earn the 10 prestige’s? Well now this is where it will come into play. It is important when playing single player or even 2 player co-op modes that you have decent load outs for your soldiers. If you have a Sniper – it will act like a sniper. If you have a soldier using an Assault weapon? It will act like that type of player. It makes it even that much more important to choose the correct loadouts to help you be successful while playing Squads
Squads Game Types:
Squad vs. Squad
This is where you play 1 v 1 against another player and pit your own soldiers against each other. If you don’t have the correct load outs? Your hosed.
In this mode you play with 5 of your AI soldiers against an advanced team of AI. So…what? Well in this game type you can play ANY of the online game modes as well as using kill streaks. So if you want to get some practice in and have that killer Squad setup? This is the way to do it.
This is a 4 player co-op version of Survival from Spec Ops. You get to fend off waves of AI Soldiers. The difference? You can now use your kill streaks from your own load out.
In this mode it is a 6 player co-op against a team of AI soldiers. You can play either as a single player or up to 5 of your friends in a Co-OP. The other team I mentioned? You can either choose to play one of your friends squads or you can choose to play customized squads from other players from around the world. In this offline game type you can choose the map and game type as well.
And of course – you will be earning XP the whole time you are playing any of the Squads game types.
Call of Duty ELITE App
Although it might not be called “Elite” anymore. This new service and smartphone app is already setup. You can sign up using your current ELITE account. This app allows you to take your online experience of Ghosts with you anywhere. It has the basics – check your stats etc. but it now has a lot more. The cool features that I liked were the Second Screen like Microsoft’s Xbox Glass, Clan Chat, and Clan Rally that can be used on your Apple iPhone.
- Second Screen -This will allow to select different load outs on the fly online – before your next match even.
- Clan Chat – This will allow you to chat with anyone in your clan that has the app installed on their phone.
- Clan Rally – This is where you can send out notices to anyone in your clan
Oh.. they did mention this will only be available only for the Apple iPhone for the release. No mention of when/if it will be support on Android, Windows, or Blackberry.
Improved Clan System
With Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 they brought in the ability for Clans to earn rewards and XP. In Black Ops II – they pretty much made it useless. Now with Ghosts they have brought it all back. With your Clan you can now take part in different events, battles online etc. to help you and your clan bonuses, unlocks and additional XP.
What I really liked is the ability to now do Clan vs Clan battles. If your on with your Clan you can select to enter a lobby against another Clan.
There is also going to be a new “Meta Game” called Clan Battles. The objective? Every 2 weeks they will start a Clan Battle where you will have to win to take over different territories from within the Call of Duty app.
Custom Clan Emblems
Although there was no mention to creating custom emblems for your soldiers. You can create a custom clan emblem from the new Call of Duty app.
E Sports, Cod Casting, and MLG
There were fears that Infinity Ward were going to forget about the world of E Sports. With the live reveal they made sure to let you know that isn’t the case. Not only that but it is going to be the official FPS game for MLG (Major League Gaming). During the exhibition match they were able to have Fwiz and Benson provide a codcast the whole match and it looked great.
Online Game Play, Network Connectivity, and Match Making
Unfortunately there wasn’t much talk about network connectivity, match making, or the current issues with lag. Although there were rumors about setting up dedicated servers for the game there just isn’t any real information about it. So for the moment I’m going on my gut telling me that we will still be playing the same ol’ Call of Duty when it comes to playing online.
Also although there is word that players will be able to move their profile between the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One. There is no word if players who still own a 360 will be matched against players who are playing on the One. Or if the same rules apply for the Sony PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
