Sometimes I really hate having to eat my words. Blizzard finally announced a release date after 10 years of waiting! With the release date though there was strangely no mention of it being available for Xbox or PS3. Read on to find out all the details and why I think the game would suck on Xbox/PS3 anyways!
Diablo III has a release date of 05/15/2012.
Most Anticipated Game of 2012?
Diablo III just bumped up to #1 in the list of my 15 Highly Anticipated Games of 2012. Guild Wars 2? Max Who? Laura What? You know that PC Gamers everywhere are going to be living in front of their computers as soon as this game is released. I might even miss a blog post or 3 due to the release of this game!
No Mention of a Release for Consoles
Why Diablo III Will Suck for Consoles Anyways
I will try and keep it brief but there are a few reasons why it would suck to play Diablo III on a console:
How would Battle.net work for consoles? I imagine it would include all sorts of bugs and lag and ruin the experience. Even worse is if they try and wedge it with Xbox Live! or Sony Entertainment’s PSN. Either way it wouldn’t be pretty and just wouldn’t be worth the time or effort.
OK, I am going to admit I am completely biased here. I have played on the PC for a long (very long) time and the control you get with a PC is still superior to a controller. The sticks might be easier for some tasks – movement etc. – but you would be severely limited for the options you have available than a PC Gamer has.
While Diablo III could be toned down for Consoles – would you really want to play it? And yes I can and will play Diablo III on my 65″ television in full 1080p booming out of my surround sound PC speakers. No way would I like to see a “dumbed down” version that is limited by the outdated hardware in both the Xbox and PS3. Hmm… maybe if they wait until 2013 when the new Consoles come out? Nah – that just brings in more problems than it solves if you read the rumors right.
With my bittersweet experience on how multiplayer works on the PS3 and Xbox with Call of Duty I can safely say that it would suck. The way it works currently for a lot of games is you are at the mercy of the person hosting on their ISP (translation: dialup) connection. You will have a horrid laggy very much a not fun experience. So unless someone is going to spring the cash for some server farms for half the population of the Earth who will be playing it? This is very much a no-go.
Blizzard Doesn’t DO Consoles
And if you look at the entire history of Blizzard –
they have never released a game for Consoles .(*ahem* Not true: They did release The Lost Vikings .. and a few other titles way back in the day – thanks Justin!) Although it might (and a very big MIGHT that would be) be a good move if they could make the transition to Consoles – this wouldn’t be the game to do it with. They are known for their PC Games. As far as I know they are one of the last bastions of PC Gaming that still only release games for PC Only?
…. So even if we do see a Console release of Diablo III? It will most likely suck. I know people out there will complain about the cost of having to upgrade their computers to be able to handle the game. To me – it is 100% Completely Worth It!
So Diablo III is Going to be Released – Now What?
This is where I go through and highlight what you will need to know in order to be ready for the game. No – this isn’t going to be a how to play the game. This will just be the basics of what Diablo III has to offer and what you will need in order to run it on your Computer.
These don’t look to painful. So if you have an older system it will most likely run on it. The nice thing is the game will be available for both Windows and Mac! Also – these are the beta specs. So they might change… but I doubt it. (Source: Battle.net Support Page)
Minimum System Requirements
Recommended System Requirements
A Battle.net account is mandatory to play the game. Just like Starcraft II. If you don’t have a valid Battle.net account and are unable to connect to the internet?
You most likely won’t be able to play the game. There are talks about letting players play LAN or Offline mode games. As soon as I can confirm it I will update the post with the information. Note in the specs above that you will need a Broadband Connection though.
There are talks from the battle.net forums about how multiplayer will work. From what I’ve read you can have up to 8 people playing in a match together in co-op. Blizzard recommends though that you keep the party down to 5.
And apparently they are trying to keep the griefing down to a minimum. If anyone played Diablo II back in the day – they remember the issues with looting, duping, and all around griefing of other players. We will need to wait and see how well they are able to handle this.
No more being able to grind through the game over and over. Each time you enter the story mode you will be presented with a new dungeon! For me this is an awesome bonus. Couple that with randomized “World Events” – which is still pretty unclear at the time of this writing. For me this is probably the best news I’ve heard about Diablo III. This game is looking better and better!
Blizzard states there will be an Armory that is similar to Word of Warcraft. You will need an active Battle.net account to be able to view your characters online. This is great for stat junkies such as myself to find out what loot I need to get to gear up my characters!
Real Money Auction House!
This is what is going to be crazy. Instead of using your in-game gold to purchase items from other players – they are going to launch the Auction House where you can use your hard earned cash to purchase items! I wonder how they are going to handle the Chinese Farmers on this one? Personally I think this is just asking for trouble.
