The battle.net forums recently received an update with a Diablo III update about a possible release date.. uh in the near future? Jay Wilson the Community Manager posted on Friday that they are still diligently working on the game and that they will be announcing a release date ‘soon’. I posted the excerpt below.
…you can seriously expect a launch-date announcement from us in the near future. See, I didn’t say “soon,” so I’m not taunting you. 😉 You’ll know as soon as I know for sure the exact date.
I personally dislike it when game developers tease their player base with garbage like this. I understand the need for it to try and keep up the interest and update the community but in my opinion Blizzard has recently been losing it.
Update: Diablo III has a release date of May 15th! Make sure to read my article here!
Diablo III had started development in 2001 and was originally officially announced back in 2008. It has been in a Closed Beta since 2011. You can check out Blizzard’s timeline from their Diablo Anniversary Page to check it out in the timeline they have posted there.
These are my speculations for the ongoing delays:
- Activision and Blizzard Merger – Every time two large gaming companies are merged there is a ton of re-shuffling (i.e. firing people) going on internally.
- A Couple (Three!?) of Revisions of the ENTIRE game.
- Trying to port it to Consoles
When I originally heard that Blizzard was going to produce Diablo III I was in joyous rapture. I missed my old top-down dungeon crawlers like Diablo, Neverwinter Nights, and even Dungeon Siege! But now with over 10 years in development – is this game going to go the way of the Duke Nukem? I respect that Blizzard’s motto is “When it’s Done!” but the luxuries they have enjoyed in the past are gone and they need to kick the development team in the ass and get a move on with it.
Hell, I’m even years late writing this article about it!
Dropping the Ball
With the cancellation of BlizzCon 2012, 2 million dropped subs in World of Warcraft, and so-so sales with Starcraft 2 – Blizzard really needs another game to keep them in the running. Activision I’m sure isn’t worrying too much at the moment as they keep riding the cash cow that is the Call of Duty series with MW3 being the top selling FPS of all time. But will Blizzard be able to get back on top? Or have they already had their climax and we are now starting to see their decline?
All is Not Lost
But with all of that being said? I’m sure Diablo III really is going to be able to kick ass and chew bubblegum. There is still a huge fan base for the Diablo series and I fully support Blizzard’s decision to release it when it’s done. But gamers are fickle – and if Activision/Blizzard pick the wrong time to release it they will be screwed and their name will be tarnished forever.
Check out the official game play trailer below to get you back into the warm fuzzies (or would be a blood-frenzied rage?) about Diablo III and don’t let my article make you feel down. All is not lost!
I apologize if you thought there was an actual Diablo III Release Date in this article. As soon as I actually get one I will update this post!
Let me know in the comments below on how you feel about the delays Blizzard has been making us suffer with.
