How to Use Pinterest To Get Your Blog Noticed

Yes, I have a Pinterest account. Yes I am a guy. And yes, I was a little wary of going to a site that appeared at first to have nothing but images of women’s underwear or crazy recipes I’d never eat strewn across it.  When most people think of Pinterest and visit the site they see a bunch of pictures of recipes, latest fashions, and cute things. I on the other hand see Pinterest as a potential gold mine of  traffic.

How is it a potential gold mine you might ask? Well, lets get through the explanation of what Pinterest is  first and then I will tell you!

What is Pinterest

You have heard the saying “A Picture can say a Thousand Words”? Think of Pinterest as giant community Cork Board where you can “Pin” your favorite images from around the web to your own board and share them with other people. With Pinterest it takes the best apsects of Facebook, Tumbler and sites like Etsy and mashes them all together into a community where you can organize and share your favorite images. You can share just about any type of image from any sites that allow it!  Online E-tailers such as Amazon love it I’m sure as when other “Pinners” click on the image it will take them directly to the site where the image was “Pinned” from.

Organize Your Favorite Stuff

What makes Pinterest great is the way you can organize your own Pinterest page into different “Boards”. When you sign up you get a few defaults like “Books Worth Reading”, “Movies Worth Watching”, “Favorite Spaces & Places”, and a few others to get you started. What is great is the fact you can edit/change/delete these boards easily and quickly.

After you have your boards setup – then it is just a matter to get to “Pinning”. How does one “Pin It”? Pinterest has a simple bookmark icon you can add to any browser bookmark bar – then when you find something interesting floating around the web you click the bookmarklet and it will do the rest. When you Pin a new item you get to put in a brief description/review/want/witty caption (See where this is going yet?)

Demographics Myth

Although the main demographic of the 7 million people who have already been invited to the site are women (Some “studies” say as high as 80%). It isn’t all about recipes and women’s fashions. I have found some really funny stuff on there as well as well as other sites such as Social Fresh on there already. So obviously I’m not the only one thinking of this!

So How is Pinterest a Bloggers Gold Mine?

So you made it this far? Great!

You can use Pinterest as a way to PROMOTE YOUR BLOG!  I know it sounds simple but this means you will need to do a few tweaks with your blog to help generate interest. In order to promote your blog you will have to allow Pinterest to display images directly from your website. And you will have to “Pin” that killer article using the “Pin It” Bookmarklet from your browser (see, you shouldn’t skim – you’ll need to read above to figure out how!). Make sure the brief description you write there is as eye-catching as the image you just “Pinned”.

Oh, Wait.. did I forget to mention that?

You’ve heard Content is King a million times. Well, with Pinterest – your Image is King. If you don’t have an eye-catching graphic to go along with that killer article – it will get buried in a sea of  women’s lingerie and pumpkin bisque recipes. On the other hand – if you have an image that piques a “Pinners” interest? It has the potential to turn viral fairly quickly and get “Re-Pinned” over and over – thus generating more interest.  If they click on that image it will go directly to your site. Not only have you generated interest to your blog – but hopefully potential subscribers as well!

A few ideas for using Pinterest to help with your site:

  • Pin your Blog Updates – Make sure to use snazzy eye-catching graphics and make sure the description is just as interesting!
  • Pin Info-graphics - People love Info-graphics - post them on Pinterest and if its good – it will get re-pinned quickly.
  • Pin Your Products! – If you have an e-book or other service – pin those as well! You could create a separate board dedicated just for this.

As you can see – if you use a little bit of imagination  you can drive a potential 7 million people to your website!

The Caveat

The only problem is how to get started with Pinterest. At this time it is only by invite only. You will need to either request an invite from the Pinterest site itself or you will need to get an invite from someone who already has an account.

As with any social medium though don’t be a jerk and only post your stuff then run away to the next site. You will need to browse around other peoples pins and comment and/or re-pin them. Also you will need to keep adding to your Pinterest page interesting bits you find around the web to share. It is just like any other community – the only way you get anything out of it is by spending time contributing to it.

I’ve started using Pinterest not only to try and generate interest in my site but to post my favorite books, movies, music, favorite products, funny quotes and pictures, geek stuff, and so much more! So:

Well this seems to be something new way to reach to the masses, as I have never heard of this way of pinning interest . May be this technique is more similar to social bookmarking, please correct me if I am wrong.

  • Lily

I think what’s really good about Pinterest is that you can pin almost anything.

  • Lisa

Do not forget to pin others stuff too as you cannot be over promotional too. Its like most other social media sites but very easy to use and like you said where images are king. Happy pinning!

Thanks for visiting the site and checking out the article. I agree – you cannot just “hit and run” it is vital that you are actually engaging with the community.

I’ve started pinning my favorite movies, music, books, as well as a ton of other stuff. The only hard part is … not wasting all of my time on there! :-)

I’d heard that Pinterest was a potential gold mine for traffic but wasn’t sure how up until now, very nicely explained. I’ll have to try and get an invite, although I do worry about wasting all of my time on a new social network aswell. Looks fun though, I can really see something like this taking off once it goes mainstream.

I didn’t know about the browser app for pinning your sites until I read this post. And you are right, skimming wouldn’t have worked.

Thanks for sharing this. I need to get involved in Pinterest.

Been reading a lot abt Pinterest but it’s not working for me in the term of traffic… Though according to report it works best for fashion and lifestyle blog…

    • http://avgjoegeek.net avgjoegeek

It hasn’t been a HUGE amount of inbound traffic – for me it’s only been about 100+ visitors since I started. The main source is still the almighty Google.

  • Amelie Hunter

Pinterest is the most happening thing currently in the social network market and is also attracting lot of new people. To be honest I learned something new in this post even if its my first time to know.

  • http://pinterest.com/faddies/up-coming-hot-events/ faddies

your post will be helpful only when people really started to follow me .. till now i have only 10 followers .. is there any way to promote without following people wildly …?

    • http://avgjoegeek.net avgjoegeek

For me that was the beauty of Pinterest. I didn’t have ANY followers when I joined. I started building my boards and then created one for the site (which I made VERY clear btw) and I started getting re-pins and then more followers.

The key is you HAVE to have some unique and interesting imagery that people will want to share. If it isn’t? You will be lost in the shuffle. Now I’m not saying that Pinterest is my #1 referrer of traffic – but I have received decent enough traffic to justify my still having a Pinterest account!

  • Cassie

I just want to say how amazingly useful this article is. I am new to the blog community and have been searching for ways to get my blog noticed. I have already been invited to join pinterest and now know the basics of using it!

    • http://avgjoegeek.net avgjoegeek

Cassie – I’m glad you found the article useful! Make sure you Follow Me inside of Pinterest (avgjoegeek of course!) I’ve been pinning Infographics which are not only fun to read but highly useful as well!

  • http://techtwisted.com Rajnish

Thanks for the great tutorial , i am going to use it from now and i hope that i get visitors from it on my new technology blog which i started a while ago but not getting visitors till now.

    • http://avgjoegeek.net avgjoegeek

Rajnish – it takes a lot of hard work and time to try and get your site noticed. Plus if your in one of the hardest niche’s (i.e. technology) to get noticed in – it is even harder! Good luck and keep at it!

  • http://techtwisted.com/ Rajnish357

I have found Pinterest in news from a while but I couldn’t understand that it is and How could I get benefit from it, I was thinking it is just another time wasting social network because till date I haven’t got any visitors from Twitter or Facebook even when I have some real followers and fans.

But After reading this tutorial I am thinking to try this one also.

    • http://avgjoegeek.net avgjoegeek

Rajnish – After I’ve written this article the realities are that a lot of people will re-pin or follow you on Pinterest. But very few will actually make it to your website.

I would find out what social media is directing traffic to your site and make sure to focus on growing from those outlets for potential traffic growth.

  • Tina

I truly enjoy reading your blog. I find that each and every time I read an article, I know a little bit more about this business we’re in. You give me some excellent ideas that make me excited all over again when I’m feeling like I wanna give up. So Thanks Avg Joe! :)

    • http://avgjoegeek.net avgjoegeek

Thanks for the kind words Tina! I would suggest checking out my new article about which Social Media you should choose as well. You might be surprised on what ends working and what isn’t for your own site!

  • http://www.geckoandfly.com Ngan

Pinterest is works greatly on blogs with lots of images, this is based on my own experience owning a design blog and a tech blog. highly recommended

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

Yup I still pin everything to Pinterest still. I get some decent traffice plus I find Pinterest fun to play around on. Thanks for visiting!

  • http://utonsite.com manoj

I didnt have any luck with pininterest,,nothing seems to be working for me,,i have tried to implement it for few of my sites and it doesnt seem to be working,,

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

Manoj – I looked at your blog. It appears it is still very new. You have very little content. My suggestion is write more. And try and be different. For Pinterest to work you will need custom images that people find interesting. That is the key to gaining popularity.

But… it might or might not get you additional traffic as it is more geared for imagery rather than technology.

  • http://www.simplybest10.com/ AjayKumar

I think pinterest works for image based sites and sites which contains eye catching images. It’s a waste of time if you are pinning something that doesn’t contain any image.

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

Yup I agree. If you don’t have any GREAT imagery when you share on Pinterest? It will get passed up fairly quickly. And as with any other Social Media – you have to share share share in order for people to even notice your stuff. It takes awhile but it does work (a little) :)

  • http://loyfly.com Kulwant Singh

Well , pinterest is very good for the traffic . I used it on my site once , but that tend to increase the bounce rate of my site :)

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

True – I have found that Pinterest can get you traffic but does increase the Bounce Rate IF you aren’t upfront with the imagery you have on there :) Thanks for dropping by and commenting!

  • http://tipsfromgeek.com Bhavyesh

I don’t know if it’s only me, but I hardly ever got any visitor from Pinterest..really don’t know how to make more out of it.

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

Yea looking at my analytic I’ve only gotten a few hundred hits to the site. It has turned into a fun time waster for me – though I still use it! The other social sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ produce a lot more visitors – and of higher quality then just people searching from Google.

  • Sachinnarangblogger

Pinterest has not every provided a single visitor to me, i think. But after reading this blog, i think i should spend more time to it, maybe i start getting visitors

    • http://avgjoegeek.net/ Jason Mathes

Its important to follow other people and to have great images/stories to share. Although I don’t get a ton of visitors from Pinterest I do get some still from there.
