With all of the rumors flying around the internet I had to throw in my 2 cents. The rumors are that Sony’s next Console code named “Orbis” will be out by 2013. Read here to get your links, information, and opinion about the upcoming console. Will it take off or be the final nail in Sonys coffin?
Brief History of the Playstation 3
Before I go into all of the specs of the new console coming out. Let’s talk about the Playstation 3 for a minute. This is a console people either love or hate.. or love to hate as the case may be. Sony has been plagued with issues – everything from a late release date, the last minute pull of compatibility with Playstation 2 games in later revisions of the console, and not really having that great of a game library until very late in the game. Not to mentioned they were hacked essentially shutting down PSN for over a month!
The Playstation 3 was originally released back in November 2006. Although the graphics were superior to Xbox – it didn’t really have any games for it developed. Even so far as 2009 when I originally purchased mine (for blu-rays lol) the game library suffered from a severe lack of titles available for it.
So.. lets fast forward to today.
PS4 The Rumors Are Flying
From what I’ve read these are the general consensus of what is happening:
New Name “Orbis”
The Playstation 4 is going by the name “Orbis“. A recent Kotaku article makes a valid point as this coincides with the handheld “Vita” – when you put the two together it literally means the “Circle of Life” (Makes me think of the Lion King for some reason..)
The hardware is going to be supplied by AMD for both processing and graphics. It will have AMD’s A8-3850 APU and their OEM Radeon HD 7670 GPU. I still have huge respect for AMD and I think its cool to see their hardware being put into Consoles. I just wish that the GPU would have been a higher end model for longevity’s sake.
Compatibility with PS3 Games?
Of course it WILL NOT BE compatible with your old PS3 games! Although this is not a huge surprise I still think it is disappointing. I hate having a cabinet full of consoles under my TV. Bleh. Anyways again no surprise though considering that they probably don’t have an easy way for the new console to read the older console’s technology.
Say Bye Bye to Used Games?
From what I have read around the internet – Sony is working on a way so you have to “register” your new game to a single User ID on the Console. What this means is when you try and sell the game the person who bought it will not only have to pay for the Used Game cost and then there will be either:
- A) No way to transfer or register the new owner to be able to play it making the game worthless
- B) You will need to pay another fee to re-register/transfer the game. And my guess it will be severely limited like Microsoft does with their Windows Operating System.
I think if Sony plays there cards right and IF they were to learn from the mistakes from the Playstation 3? They will have a winner on there hands and will be able to stay in the Video Game Console market. Look for a future article on what I think Sony will need to do make the Playstation 4 Orbis successful!
